One person died and several others were buried before being rescued unscathed in “at least” four avalanches which were triggered this Saturday in Savoie, the prefecture said.

“At least four avalanches have been triggered in the Savoyard massifs.

One person died and several others were buried and left unscathed by the piste services of the stations concerned, ”the prefecture said in a statement.

High avalanche risk

The avalanche risk has been very high for several days in all the massifs of the department (level 4/5), add the authorities, stressing that "the recent heavy snowfall has made the snowpack very unstable".

“On many slopes, the passage of a single skier or hiker is likely to trigger an avalanche.

Sunday, the avalanche risk will still be very high, level 4/5 in the Savoyard massifs, ”warns the prefecture.
