Ex Ilva, Bonelli: the government hid the birth of 600 malformed children

01 June 2019 "The news that is not news: 600 children born with congenital malformations between 2002 and 2015 in Taranto as reported in the Health damage assessment: it is history that repeats itself and as happened in 2012 the data are not made public of the epidemiological investigation Paths of the Higher Institute of Health on Taranto which it analyzes up to the year 2018 ".

This is what the national coordinator of the Greens, Angelo Bonelli declares.

Bonelli adds: "The national government decided not to present the epidemiological investigation in May, postponing the presentation to July or after the European elections; the current pentastellato government is doing exactly the same thing that the government did with Minister of the Environment Clini when he waited six months before presenting the investigation waiting for the form of the aberrant authorization to Ilva ".

"From an excerpt of the epidemiological investigation - he continues - we read that people continue to die in Taranto and the risks of death linked to pollution have increased despite the assurances of the government that all is well and the accusations of alarmism made against environmentalists".     

"The figure of 600 malformed children - assures the leader of the Greens - is present in the assessment of the health damage of the Arcelor Mittal steel plant, why was this news not made public considering that the report was presented in 2018?", He asks.

"Why don't 600 children born malformed become news? Why did the ministers of the Environment, Health, and Economic Development Costa, Grillo and Di Maio not make this news public, why did they postpone the presentation of the epidemiological investigation? if we find ourselves in another European country - he denounces - this would be a scandal that would lead to the resignation of members of the government and beyond ". 

"With this government, the ministries of Health, Economic Development, the Environment and the Minister of the South are working together with the aim of clarifying, updating all the data in our possession and finally putting them , in the system. The citizens of Taranto must no longer feel alone or, worse still, abandoned ": This was declared by the Minister of Health Giulia Grillo.

"For the SIN of Taranto, the Ministry of Health, based on the agreement of 24 April 2019 signed by the interministerial control room, is updating the mortality and disease data with a specific epidemiological observatory - he adds - The epidemiological data of the V Study Paths on sites of national interest, not only in Taranto, concern the period 2006-2013, and not 2018 as erroneously reported in some statements taken from the press. The data for 2013 had been disclosed for some time, in fact the Istituto Superiore di Sanità is working on updates ".

"The Ministry of Health and the Environment, moreover, are working to arrive at June 24 with the amendments to the decree on the assessment of environmental damage to health with elements of high predictive evaluation. The two ministries are also accelerating the remediation procedures - he concludes Minister Giulia Grillo - With the Puglia Region and the Taranto ASL, investments were released for the acquisition of diagnostic and therapeutic technology for oncological pathologies ".
