Zakopane (dpa) - The German ski jumpers disappointed in the snow flurry of Zakopane and only took sixth place in the team competition.

Markus Eisenbichler, Karl Geiger, Severin Freund and Pius Paschke had a very bitter sporty day and had nothing to do with the fight for victory.

The Austrians won ahead of hosts Poland and Norway.

The quartets from Slovenia and Japan were also stronger than the eagles of the German Ski Association.

Even after the first round with changing wind conditions, the team of national coach Stefan Horngacher was far behind.

The flying artists around ski flying world champion Geiger and overall runner-up Eisenbichler were more than 40 meters short of the leading Poles.

Sixth place at halftime was sobering.

“It wasn't technically clean enough from the jumps.

There were some mistakes in it, »said Horngacher on ARD.

The Austrian added: “I think the guys were a little too tense.

You wanted too much and then the shot backfires. "

It was significant that Severin Freund, who was not very convincing earlier this season, managed the longest jump in the German team with a jump of 129.5 meters in the first round.

In the second round, Freund landed after 120 meters and said: "We just have a difficult day today."

The 32-year-old didn't really know why.

Sometimes there are days in ski jumping "when it is not obvious at first glance".

The Bavarian announced an analysis.

Eisenbichler really sagged in the first attempt after a good first flight phase and came to 126.5 meters.

He followed up with a barely better 127 meter jump.

Geiger (121.5 and 135.5 meters) showed at least a good second jump, which should give him some confidence.

For Paschke (119.5 and 109 meters), however, it didn't work at all.

In what was previously the only team competition of the season in November in Wisla, Germany was second behind Austria and ahead of Poland.

On Sunday, at the end of the World Cup weekend, there is an individual competition (4 p.m. / ARD and Eurosport).

Then Geiger, Eisenbichler and their teammates want to improve.
