Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - After the election of Armin Laschet as the successor to Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer at the top of the CDU, CDU parliamentary group leader Wolfgang Reinhart was relieved on Saturday.

“First of all, I'm glad that there is now finally clarity.

From now on we no longer need to deal with ourselves, but can play together on the goal of the political opponent, "said Reinhart on Saturday in Stuttgart.

The CDU in Baden-Württemberg will give this an enormous boost in the election campaign.

A new state parliament will be elected in the southwest on March 14th.

"I really liked how respectful and fair the candidates were to each other until the very end," explained Reinhart.

"It is no secret that the majority of us in Baden-Württemberg would have liked Friedrich Merz as the new party chairman," added Reinhart.

He is confident that Merz will remain in a leading position in the party.

North Rhine-Westphalia's Prime Minister Laschet prevailed on Saturday at the digital CDU party congress in a runoff election against ex-Union parliamentary group leader Friedrich Merz.

The decision still has to be formally confirmed by postal vote.
