Neuss (dpa) - A buzzard got into great trouble in the Erft in Neuss - and was rescued by a swimming firefighter in special outfit.
The raptor had tried in vain on Saturday afternoon to reach the dry bank, as the fire department announced.
The drifting buzzard clung to a branch and fought against the current.
But because it was inaccessible to the rescuers from the bank, a firefighter wearing a special suit stepped into the cold water.
"After a short swim and a courageous grip, the buzzard could be secured in the middle of the Erft," it said.
The bird of prey was visibly taken away and soaked, then handed over to a vet without resistance.
After he had warmed up overnight, he should be released back into nature by the treating vet, it said.
