Stuttgart (dpa) - According to the will of the Federal Ministry of Transport, trains with digital security technology are also to run at the planned first digitized rail node in Germany in Stuttgart.

Minister Andreas Scheuer (CSU) announced a corresponding funding program with a volume of up to 200 million euros on Friday.

S-Bahn as well as regional and long-distance trains, which run at the future “Digitalen Node Stuttgart”, are to use the money with components of the European train control system ERTMS (“European Rail Traffic Management System”) and the so-called automated train operation ATO (“Automatic Train Operation” ) are equipped.

"Not only the rails, the trains are also going digital," said Scheuer.

In the future, rail drivers could be more reliable, punctual and even more climate and environmentally friendly on the road.

Digital infrastructure and digital trains belong together, also emphasized rail infrastructure director Ronald Pofalla.

"With today's funding commitment, the federal government is enormously strengthening the digital railways in Germany," he said.

According to the information, the model project should show, among other things, how trains can be effectively digitized and how capacity in the network can be increased if both the trains and the infrastructure are equipped with digital security technology.

It was decided last summer to make the Stuttgart region the first digitized railway junction in Germany as part of the Stuttgart 21 station project by the end of 2025.

The railway expects investments of 462.5 million euros.
