January 15, 2021 Director Bong Joon-ho will be the president of the international jury of the 78th Venice Film Festival.

The Biennale announces it.

"The Venice Film Festival brings with it a long and rich history, and I am honored to be involved in its wonderful film tradition," commented the director of 'Parasite'.

The 78th Venice International Film Festival will take place from 1 to 11 September 2021, and will award the Golden Lion for Best Film, as well as other official awards.

The decision to entrust the director with the presidency of the jury was taken by the board of directors of the Venice Biennale, which confirmed the recommendation of the Director of the Venice Film Festival, Alberto Barbera.

Accepting the proposal, Bong Joon Ho said: “The Venice International Film Festival carries with it a long and varied history and I am honored to be part of its beautiful film tradition.

As president of the jury - and above all as a cinephile - I am ready to admire and applaud all the great films selected by the festival.

I am full of hope and excitement. "

Barbera commented:" The first good news regarding the 78th Venice Film Festival is that Bong Joon-ho has enthusiastically accepted to preside over the Jury. Today, this great Korean director is one of the most authentic and original voices of world cinema. We are immensely grateful to him for having agreed to put his passion as an attentive, curious and unscrupulous cinephile at the service of our festival. It is a pleasure and an honor to be able to share the joy of this moment with the countless admirers, all over the world, of his extraordinary films. The decision to entrust the Jury to a Korean filmmaker, for the first time in the history of the festival, is also the confirmation that the Venetian festival embraces cinema from all over the world, and that directors from every country know they can consider Venice their second home ".
