Basel / Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - Regions in north-western Switzerland are concerned about planned German corona entry regulations abroad.

In a letter published on Friday from the cantons of the Northwestern Swiss government conference (Solothurn, Basel-Stadt, Basel-Landschaft, Aargau and Jura) to Baden-Württemberg's Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann (Greens), the Swiss point out that around 70,000 cross-border commuters leave the Upper Rhine every day France and Germany cross the borders into north-western Switzerland.

Many of them would work in health care jobs that could not be carried out from home, such as in hospitals or care facilities.

"They make a significant contribution to the functioning of health care in north-western Switzerland and an efficient fight against pandemics."

"Regular testing of cross-border commuters every 48 hours and the corresponding controls seem hardly practical," warned the Swiss.

According to the cantons, the proposed measures would lead to a "de facto border closure".

They therefore appeal to Kretschmann to use his discretion in order to “continue to find the most flexible and pragmatic solutions possible” for cross-border commuters.
