Munich (dpa) - CSU boss Markus Söder called on the Union to preserve the legacy of Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) before the start of the federal election campaign and with a view to the upcoming election of a new CDU chairman.

"Anyone who believes they can win the federal election by breaking with Angela Merkel is fundamentally wrong," Söder told the newspapers of the Funke media group (Friday).

Merkel was one of “the very great chancellors in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany” and there was “an extremely high level of approval in Germany” for her person and her politics.

(...).

"Your legacy must be preserved and at the same time enriched with new ideas for the next stage of German politics," said Söder.

With a view to the Union's candidacy for chancellor, the Bavarian Prime Minister repeated that, from his point of view, the freestyle should take place as late as possible.

"The hasty nomination of Olaf Scholz as candidate for chancellor has so far not brought the SPD any appreciable profit."

When asked under what circumstances the Union's candidate for chancellor could come from the CSU, Söder did not give a clear answer: “Even in the CDU, it is being discussed that there has not yet been a born candidate.

Who is the right one also depends on the content profile with which we want to go into the Bundestag election. "

The CDU determined a new party leader in an online election on Saturday morning.

NRW Prime Minister Armin Laschet, ex-Union parliamentary group leader Friedrich Merz and foreign politician Norbert Röttgen compete for the post.

If the new CDU chairman is elected, the discussion about the right candidate for chancellor should quickly gain momentum in the Union.
