Frankfurt / Main (dpa / lhe) - More than 1100 candidates apply for a seat in the Frankfurt city parliament in the Hessian municipal elections in March.

That said Oliver Becker, head of the Citizens' Office, on Friday on the sidelines of the election commission meeting.

That is 121 applicants more than in the last election in 2016. There are 93 seats in the city council of the largest city in Hesse.

On March 14th, the members of the 16 Frankfurt local councils as well as the members of the local foreign representation will be elected.

The election committee admitted a total of 3346 candidates on Monday.

The electoral office assumes around 515,000 eligible voters.

In view of the corona pandemic, hygiene concepts are being developed for the polling stations to organize the election.

Ventilation, clearances, larger areas and signage for entrances and exits were part of it, said Becker.

Some things are currently still uncertain: "We are still waiting for a decree from Wiesbaden."

According to the current regulations, a mask requirement can only be ordered for election workers.

If a voter wants to enter the polling station without covering his mouth and nose, the right to vote currently has the higher priority.

"We are not allowed to expel anyone from the polling station," said Becker.

The expected decree may contain new rules.

The city is currently recruiting election workers who can also apply online.

Some voices could be heard from the local districts that it could be more difficult to recruit election workers this year, said Becker.

It is currently being advertised more and more among younger people for election workers.
