Berlin (dpa) - The Russian ambassador in Berlin, Sergej Netschajew, has sharply criticized the interference by the USA in the construction of the Russian-German Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline.

"The attempts by the USA to prevent the project from being implemented through blackmail, threats and extraterritorial sanctions are an expression of unfair competition," said Nechayev to the editorial network Germany (RND / Friday).

"We consider this approach and the related argumentation to be unacceptable and illegal or not convincing."

The USA wants to stop the construction of the almost completed gas pipeline and has threatened sanctions against companies involved in the construction.

They justify their resistance with what they consider to be an excessive dependence of the European partners on Russian gas.

Pipeline proponents accuse the US of only wanting to sell their liquefied gas better in Europe.

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania wants to overturn the sanctions threatened by the USA with an environmental foundation aimed at the common good.

Consideration is given to buying the foundation's components and machines, which are essential for the completion of the gas pipeline, through a commercial enterprise closely tied to Nord Stream 2.

The establishment of the foundation was "a good right of the state government of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania," said Netschajew.

"We do not consider ourselves entitled to comment on this decision."
