Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - More solar systems are to be installed on the roofs of supermarkets, shopping centers and other businesses in North Rhine-Westphalia.

This is a joint initiative of the state with companies and associations.

The aim is to double the photovoltaic capacity installed in NRW to 10 gigawatts by 2030, announced the NRW trade association on Friday.

According to the Ministry of Economic Affairs of North Rhine-Westphalia, the discounters Aldi and Lidl, the supermarket chains Edeka and Rewe, the furniture retailer Ikea and the operator of shopping centers ECE participate in the initiative.

Photovoltaics make a significant contribution to the success of the energy transition, said NRW Economics Minister Andreas Pinkwart (FDP) according to the announcement. "It is inexpensive, widely accepted by the population and it allows electricity to be generated directly by consumers."
