Munich (dpa) - The education researcher Ludger Wößmann has called for priority for school lessons in the fight against corona.

"There is no effective protection in old people's and nursing homes, no decisive rules for open-plan offices and for other workplaces as well as for travel," criticized the head of the Munich Ifo Center for Educational Economics in the "Wirtschaftswoche" (Friday).

"Other European countries have set the priorities the other way around: schools open, but far greater restrictions on public life outside of schools."

School openings could be staggered according to age - for grades 1 to 6 face-to-face lessons should take place as soon as possible, demanded Woessmann.

In addition, every day in all schools for all pupils there must be video lessons in all subjects.

Because the damage caused by school closings is enormous: individual students have to expect an average of three percent less income over their entire professional life if a third of a school year is lost, Wößmann wrote.

Germany has to reckon with an average of 1.5 percent lower economic power by the end of the century - the equivalent of 2.5 trillion euros.
