Berlin (dpa) - According to CSU boss Markus Söder, the Union is facing particularly great challenges this year not only because of the Corona crisis.

"It is about key decisions for the next ten years in our country," said the Bavarian Prime Minister on Friday in his greeting at the digital federal party conference of the CDU.

Even if the corona pandemic currently requires all attention, the CDU and CSU must also have ideas for the time after.

Söder warned again that, given the current polls, the Union is too confident of winning the federal election.

It is a completely new challenge to campaign without Chancellor Angela Merkel as a top candidate.

In addition, the pandemic has "changed more than we think" in society.

For a successful election, the Union needs a new concept that does not give old answers to new questions.

With a view to the upcoming election of the CDU boss on Saturday, Söder emphasized that he and the CSU could work well with all three candidates.

But the truth is also that the Union must continue to work well together in the future, as the challenges are enormous.

"There has never been an election campaign in a party for so long," said Söder, who also thanked the outgoing CDU leader Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer for the good cooperation in recent years.
