Rostock (dpa / mv) - The Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Anglers' Association has welcomed the new regulation on the use of commercial fishing ponds.

"Anglers don't sit shoulder to shoulder on the bank, they need space to cast the bait and land their catch," said association spokeswoman Claudia Thürmer of the German press agency.

The currently applicable Corona distance rules as well as contact restrictions can be adhered to very well at fishing ponds, but also on boats.

According to the responsible state office, commercial fishing ponds are classified by the Ministry of Economic Affairs as service providers and are therefore allowed to open in compliance with corona protection measures.

At the same time, fishing is still permitted as a private leisure activity in lakes, rivers and coastal waters if the corona rules are observed.

However, according to the Corona state ordinance, the offering of fishing trips with cutters and commercial rental boats is not permitted.

The anglers' association expressed the wish that the ban on commercial cutter tours be checked again.

The tourism association also welcomed the easing of the restrictions on fishing ponds as a decision with a "sure instinct".

The risk of infection when fishing in the pond is very low if the distances are observed, said the managing director of the regional tourism association, Tobias Woitendorf.

On the other hand, the ongoing ban on commercial fishing trips is understandable, since close contacts on a boat are more difficult to prevent.

In principle, fishing tourism plays an important role for Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

According to surveys, nine percent of tourists fish, said Woitendorf.

These approximately one million guests are a factor that should not be neglected.

According to the applicable Corona rules, however, entry into Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania for tourist purposes is not permitted for citizens of other federal states.
