"Human remains" were discovered Thursday at midday in a burnt out utility vehicle in Bellegarde (Gard), said Eric Maurel, the public prosecutor of Nîmes, announcing the opening of an investigation for " assassination ”.

"The state of degradation of the body proves a long and intense combustion", and did not allow identification at this stage, specified the prosecutor.

Discovered by a passerby

An autopsy will be performed on Friday.

The macabre discovery was made by a passer-by alerted by the smoke emanating from the vehicle, in an isolated area of this town located 15 km south-east of Nîmes.

Many technicians in criminal identification had gone there in the afternoon, noted an AFP correspondent.

The Nîmes research section and the Gard gendarmerie group are responsible for the investigation.
