The US federal authorities executed the death penalty for a former drug smuggler accused of a series of murders, and another execution is scheduled for Friday, five days before US President Donald Trump leaves the White House.

Cory Johnson, a 52-year-old African American, received a lethal injection at Terre Haute Federal Prison in Indiana.

In 1992 he was a member of a gang that committed dozens of murders in Richmond, Virginia.

A federal court sentenced him for participating in seven of them.

His last words were directed at the relatives of his victims.

Among the most prominent of his statements was, "I would have liked to say before that I am sorry but I did not know how. I hope you find peace."

Dustin Higgs, a 48-year-old black man convicted of ordering the kidnapping and killing of three young women on federal land near Washington in 1996, will face the same fate Friday.

The two men were infected with Corona last December, and the judge decided a few days ago to postpone their execution for weeks.

Twelve Americans have received lethal injections in Terre Haute since the summer, including Johnson, for the first time in nearly 70 years.

52-year-old Lisa Montgomery was executed by lethal injection in the federal prison complex in Terry Haute, Indiana.

Lisa is the 11th prisoner to receive a lethal injection there since last July, when US President Donald Trump resumed federal executions after 17 years of stopping them.
