January 14, 2021 The American road safety agency Nhtsa (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) asks Tesla to recall 158,000 cars in the United States for a safety issue related to the running out of memory in the on-board computer, particularly the infotainment system .

The agency does not comment on the letter, which is a rare step towards a public hearing and eventual legal action. Experts say the letter means Tesla has resisted a recall that Nhtsa deems necessary. Last June, the agency opened an investigation into complaints that giant touch screens have gone dark in some Model S cars from 2012 to 2018 and Model X Tesla vehicles from 2016 to 2018.
