It was hoped for, announced, then expected.

Finally, with the rebound of the Covid-19 pandemic, the January and February plenary sessions of the European Parliament will once again take place in Brussels rather than Strasbourg, its official seat.

A difficult decision decided on Wednesday by the presidents of the political groups of the hemicycle following a proposal from the President of Parliament, David Sassoli, yet a recognized defender of the seat in Strasbourg.

In a few days, it will be a year since MEPs have set foot in the Alsatian capital.

One year without a session

President Sassoli also indicated "that the French authorities ask to postpone until April the commemoration" planned in honor of the former president Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, initially planned for the beginning of February, specifies the president of the EPP (right), Manfred Weber.

The German deputy says he hopes for a return to Strasbourg in March, even if the health situation in “all of Europe is still extremely difficult”.

However, since March, no plenary session has taken place in the Alsatian capital and many MEPs wish to focus their activity exclusively on Brussels.

The group leaders also reiterated on Wednesday their intention to see the new American president, Joe Biden, come and speak to them soon.

If "Strasbourg is the best place to address Europeans", according to Manfred Weber, it is far from won….

Many in Alsace would be satisfied with a simple return of the sessions.
