Hanover (dpa / lni) - prostate cancer in men and breast cancer in women are the most common new cancer cases in Lower Saxony.

This emerges from the annual report "Cancer in Lower Saxony", which the Epidemiological Cancer Register Lower Saxony (EKN) and the Clinical Cancer Register Lower Saxony (KKN) published for the first time together with the newly established State Clinical Evaluation Center on Thursday.

The EKN evaluated the data from the diagnosis years 2017 and 2018: In the country, 49 236 new cancer cases were diagnosed per year (26 036 in men and 23 200 in women).

Annually 22 864 people died of cancer (12 427 men and 10 437 women).

For 2020, the EKN expects an increase to around 52,200 new cases, mainly due to the increasing aging of society.

The most common new cases of men are prostate cancer (6863 cases annually, 26.4 percent of all new cancer cases in men), lung cancer (3578, 13.7 percent) and colon cancer (3390, 13.0 percent).

The most common new cases among women are breast cancer (7239 cases annually, 31.2 percent), colon cancer (2999, 12.9 percent) and lung cancer (2169, 9.4 percent).
