In the U.S., the New York State Attorney General on Thursday filed charges against the city’s police department for excessive use of force in last year’s Black Lives Matter protests.

According to the prosecutor, the city police, among other things, arrested peaceful protesters on false grounds and used haphazard and pepper spray against the protesters at random and without justification.

This led to significant injuries, according to Chief Prosecutor Letitia James, and violated people’s fundamental right to demonstrate peacefully.

Tens of thousands of people protested in New York City in May and June after black George Floyd died in police strangles in Minneapolis. New York police were recently criticized for the harsh treatment of protesters.
