Göttingen / Einbeck (dpa / lni) - The Göttingen public prosecutor has brought charges against a man from the Braunschweig region for 16 arson attacks and 33 fraudulent acts.

The 24-year-old is said to be responsible for a series of fires in Einbeck last summer, as the law enforcement agency announced on Thursday.

The investigators tracked down the alleged perpetrator because he had been photographed by a wildlife camera during a fire in the immediate vicinity of the crime scene and could be identified.

The man had admitted all acts, said the prosecutor.

He drove haphazardly through Lower Saxony and started fires, with the fire relieving valves.

"In retrospect, he regretted having done these things," wrote the judicial authority.

The fire in a barn alone caused property damage of around 250,000 euros.

The man was arrested by a mobile task force in a hotel in Königslutter in September 2020 and is on remand.

For his actions, he is said to have stolen a car after a test drive and refueled several times without paying.

He should therefore answer for the embezzlement of a car worth 37,000 euros.

Hotel bills also remained unpaid.

There were initially no trial dates.
