Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - The Greens in North Rhine-Westphalia are under certain conditions for an FFP2 mask requirement when shopping and in local transport.

The infection situation in North Rhine-Westphalia is tense despite the lockdown that has been going on for weeks, said Mona Neubaur, the head of the Green Party, of the Rheinische Post (Thursday).

In addition, it is completely unclear how the virus mutation discovered in England and South Africa will affect North Rhine-Westphalia.

"An obligation to wear FFP2 masks in buses, trains and shops is therefore generally useful," she said.

"But quick shots like in Bavaria don't help us."

First of all, it must be ensured that the FFP2 masks are available in sufficient quantities and nationwide.

Free masks should be given to people on low incomes.

"Protection against infection shouldn't be a question of the wallet," says Neubaur.

SPD parliamentary group leader Thomas Kutschaty also called on the state government to "make FFP2 masks available free of charge as widely as possible and to advertise mainly to wear these masks".

In Bavaria, according to a decision by the state cabinet, an FFP2 mask must be worn in shops and in local public transport from next week.

Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) justified this with the fact that these masks protected the wearer themselves better than conventional masks.

The NRW state government is also currently examining an FFP2 mask requirement.

NRW Health Minister Karl-Josef Laumann (CDU) had expressed skepticism.

FFP2 masks could offer a bit more security, but only if they were worn correctly.
