Berlin (dpa / bb) - Because he is said to have traded in forged documents, a 39-year-old is standing in front of the Berlin district court.

According to the indictment, the man is said to have obtained fake Croatian, Slovak, Italian and Greek personal papers, driver's licenses and residence permits and sold them to customers.

He had acted with his separately persecuted brother.

The defense attorney said at the beginning of the trial on Thursday that his client admitted the allegations.

The public prosecutor's office is assuming 25 cases of document forgery between August 2019 and June 2020.

The 39-year-old was also guilty of smuggling foreigners in some of the acts.

He and his brother had established contact with interested parties for false papers, obtained the necessary data and photos from them and had the forgeries produced by strangers.

According to the prosecutor, the accused was aware that the customers would use the forgeries to deceive about their identity and citizenship and to be able to live and work as alleged EU citizens in the EU.

In addition, in four cases the defendant is said to have brokered accommodation and employment relationships for a fee for people who were staying illegally in Germany.

He was arrested in June 2020 and has been in custody ever since.
