Potsdam (dpa / bb) - According to Education Minister Britta Ernst (SPD), it is currently not possible to open up primary schools in Brandenburg to alternate teaching between face-to-face and home-based learning.

"The number of infections in Brandenburg remains at a high level and the incidence figures do not currently allow primary schools to be opened in Brandenburg," said Ernst on Thursday in the education committee of the state parliament.

For the whole of Brandenburg, almost 250 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants were registered within one week on Thursday.

The average value of the 7-day incidence in Brandenburg was thus far above the critical level of 200. The Elbe-Elster district is the corona hotspot with an incidence value of 454.7.

The AfD MP Dennis Hohloch had nevertheless called for the immediate opening of primary schools in the committee.

Children up to the age of twelve do not contribute significantly to the new infections, said the MP.

The schools in Brandenburg have been closed since the beginning of January, except for final classes, special needs schools and emergency care, learning is done at home.

The cabinet had agreed to reassess the situation from January 18 and decide whether there is scope for elementary schools to switch lessons in schools and at home.
