Schwerin (dpa / mv) - Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is preparing for elections under pandemic conditions.

The interior committee of the state parliament concluded on Thursday, according to the CDU parliamentary group, its deliberations on the planned amendment to the municipal and state election law.

Nothing stands in the way of the adoption of the draft law introduced by the coalition parties SPD and CDU.

This should take place in the plenary session at the end of January, announced the CDU member Sebastian Ehlers.

The aim of the change is to ensure basic democratic rights such as elections even in the event of natural disasters or pandemics.

This will make it possible to have elections held entirely by postal vote.

"I hope that we can do without it in view of the corona pandemic, but we must keep the appropriate options open for emergencies," said Ehlers.

In addition, candidates for state and local elections will in future also be possible without a general meeting or party convention.

The law also regulates that municipalities can hold meetings as video conferences or hybrid meetings.

This will meet the wishes of numerous local politicians, said Ehlers.

Municipal councils and district councils could delegate tasks to main and district committees with a two-thirds majority and thus avoid larger meetings, for example in times of pandemic.

In view of the current high number of infections and the associated contact restrictions, the City and Community Day had already expressed the expectation that the upcoming mayoral elections will take place as postal votes.

The state parliament of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania will be re-elected on September 26th.

The general election will also take place on this day.
