Egypt .. The death of Safwat Al-Sharif after a struggle with illness

The former head of the Egyptian Shura Council, Safwat Al-Sharif, died yesterday evening after a long struggle with illness.

The family of Al-Sharif announced that the reports that he had contracted the Coronavirus were untrue, according to what was


revealed by his son Ihab Al-Sharif, saying, “His father died of leukemia”.

Ihab explained that his father had been suffering from leukemia six years ago, and several days ago, the pain of the disease returned to him, so he was transferred to the hospital last Saturday, to receive treatment and continuous follow-up.

Safwat Al-Sharif was born in Gharbia Governorate on December 19, 1933, and obtained a Bachelor of Military Sciences, and was one of the founding members of the National Democratic Party in 1977, and assumed the presidency of the State Information Service during the era of former Egyptian President Anwar Sadat.

Then he assumed the position of Minister of Information, and he is considered the most prominent person who took over the ministry and the one who remained in the position, as he assumed the ministry on February 1, 1982 and continued until July 13, 2004, when he was elected Chairman of the Shura Council, a position in which he remained until 2011.

Safwat al-Sharif also held the position of Secretary General of the National Democratic Party from 2002 to 2011.

The last official appearance of Safwat Al-Sharif was during the condolences of former Egyptian President Mohamed Hosni Mubarak.
