China recorded the first death from Covid-19 on its territory for eight months, health authorities announced Thursday, January 14, in a country fighting against the resurgences of the epidemic that it had largely controlled.

The death occurred in Hebei province, the National Health Commission said, without giving further information.

It is in this province that several cities were recently subjected to containment after the appearance of contaminations.

The last death linked to the pandemic in mainland China was in May 2020. According to the official report, now 4,635 people in the country have succumbed to Covid-19.

A WHO team expected

This new death recorded in China comes as a team from the World Health Organization (WHO) is expected in the country on Thursday to investigate the origin of the pandemic, once their preventive quarantine has expired.

This team of ten people is due to arrive in Wuhan (central China), where the virus was first reported at the end of 2019, before spreading around the world.

On Thursday, Chinese health authorities also reported 138 new infections.

This is the highest daily toll since last March.
