Schwerin (dpa / mv) - In the opinion of CDU state chief Michael Sack, CDU chairman candidate Friedrich Merz scores in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania above all with a clear appearance.

"I think that's because of the clarity with which he acts," said Sack of the German press agency.

According to Sack, both the majority of the 15 delegates from MV and the majority of the party base in the country lean towards Friedrich Merz.

Next Saturday, 1001 delegates will make the decision at an online party congress on who will succeed CDU leader Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer.

In addition to ex-Union parliamentary group leader Merz, NRW Prime Minister Armin Laschet and foreign politician Norbert Röttgen are running.

Sack did not want to say anything about his personal preference: "Since I am not a delegate and cannot vote."

He does not see the support for Merz in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania as a vote against the long-time CDU chairman and chancellor Angela Merkel, who comes from the MV regional association.

There is a lot of support for Angela Merkel.

"It's more a look ahead, so to speak: who of the three candidates could do well in the future from the country's point of view."

Merz had repeatedly criticized Angela Merkel's policy and failed in a run-off election in 2018 in the race for party leadership at Merkel's favorite Kramp-Karrenbauer.
