On the question of the Union's candidacy for chancellor, the top of the economy by far favor the former CDU parliamentary group leader Friedrich Merz, while the political leaders clearly favor the North Rhine-Westphalian Prime Minister Armin Laschet.

This was the result of an Allensbach survey of more than 500 decision-makers from business, politics and administration on behalf of the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” and “Capital”.

The so-called elite panel also revealed “interesting chancellor preferences”, as the “FAZ” reported on Thursday.

Compared to the already nominated SPD chancellor candidate Olaf Scholz, business leaders preferred above all CSU boss Markus Söder - but would also see Merz, Laschet and third CDU chairman Norbert Röttgen in the chancellery rather than the SPD finance minister.

The political elites, on the other hand, would only prefer Laschet to Scholz as chancellor.

Laschet would therefore be the only one on which both camps could agree.

The expectation of the election result is more closed than the opinion of the political staff.

According to the survey, managers, politicians and civil servants expect a black-green coalition in the federal government - and that would also be their desired combination.

For the first time, a coalition of CDU, CSU and Greens ranks among the country’s decision-makers before a black-yellow coalition.

For the representative elite panel, the Allensbach Institute for Demoskopie interviewed 112 politicians, including 20 ministers or prime ministers.

In addition, 357 managers took part, including 100 board members from companies with more than 20,000 employees.

48 people from the administration were also interviewed, mostly heads of federal or state authorities.
