Trier (dpa) - One and a half months after the rampage in Trier with five dead and many injured, the places of memorial and mourning in the Trier pedestrian zone are being dissolved.

This is done at the request of some relatives of the victims and "with the express consent" of the bereaved families, the city of Trier announced on Thursday.

Citizens left numerous candles, stuffed animals and other memorial objects in the places where people died.

The candle islands should no longer be visible from the weekend.

On December 1, a gunman raced through the pedestrian zone with his sports vehicle and targeted people.

The 51-year-old alleged perpetrator is in custody and has not yet given any information about the motive.

In the act, 24 people were injured.

Two of them are being treated with life-threatening injuries in clinics, a city spokesman said.

The families of the bereaved would receive the memorial items that are important to them, the city said.

The other things would be archived by the city.

The many candles should be concentrated at the Trier Porta Nigra, where there should also be a permanent central point of remembrance in the future.

What this will look like is still unclear.

Even when there should be an official commemoration is still open.

“This happens in close coordination with the bereaved.

It is their perspective that guides us in all further steps, ”said Trier Mayor Wolfram Leibe (SPD).
