Munich (dpa / lby) - Several online petitions against the cancellation of the carnival holidays in Bavaria were signed a total of more than 75,000 times by Thursday.

With the votes on the Internet, students and teachers are demanding that the cancellation of the holiday week be reversed.

The school holidays were originally supposed to be from February 15th to 19th.

The Bavarian Ministry of Culture now wants to compensate for the adverse effects on teaching due to the corona pandemic.

Ideally, face-to-face classes should then take place in the schools during the actual holiday week.

More than 36,000 supporters had signed a petition on the global campaign network Avaaz by Thursday, and the initiators want to get 50,000 signatures.

Another initiative on the Openpetition platform had almost reached the target of 24,000 with more than 22,000 supporters.

The GEW teachers' union has also started a petition on this website, which more than 17,000 people signed within a day.

The union points out that children, parents and teachers are under pressure in the pandemic and that eleven weeks of uninterrupted schooling is stressful.

"One week of additional lessons, whether at a distance or in person, can no longer hide the fact that this school year is not a normal school year," said the GEW.

"Instead of canceling holidays, exams and transfer should be adjusted."
