The National Institute of Statistics places the excess of deaths registered between March 15, when the first wave of the coronavirus began, and December 27, 2020 in relation to the same period of the previous year at 80,202 people.

According to the death statistics published this Wednesday by the INE, between mid-March and the end of December 2020, 391,398 people died in Spain compared to the 311,196 who died in the same period of 2019, although this body counts deaths from all causes , not only for covid-19.

Week 14 of 2020 (from March 30 to April 5) registered the highest rebound of the year with a total of 20,767 deaths, compared to the 8,807 that occurred a year earlier, 135 percent more.

Another spike in deaths in 2020 occurred in week 45 (from November 2 to 8) when 10,599 people died, 2,922 more than a year before, a 38 percent increase.

Of the 80,202 excess deaths between weeks 11 and 52 of the year 2020, 38,438 were men and 41,764 women.

By age, in both sexes the majority correspond to those over 70 years of age.

In the aforementioned period of 2020, 196,777 men and 194,621 women died.

A year earlier, the figures between March 15 and December 27 were 158,339 men and 152,857 women.
