Hamburg (dpa / lno) - Should there no longer be nationwide games in the 3rd men's handball leagues due to the ongoing corona pandemic, the sporting descent should be suspended and a promotion round to the 2nd Bundesliga should be played.

A relay day was agreed on late Tuesday evening with the 72 clubs of the four third division seasons and the German Handball Federation (DHB).

Last Monday, the DHB decided to suspend the game until February 28th.

The aim is to then finish a simple round.

A restart appears unlikely.

"The beginning of March is unrealistic," said Tobias Woitendorf, club manager of HC Empor Rostock, the "Ostsee-Zeitung" (Wednesday).

The Rostockers are table leaders in the Nord-Ost relay, which also includes the Mecklenburg bulls, the Stralsund HV (both Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania), the HSG Ostsee, the TSV Altenholz, the HSG Eider Harde (all Schleswig-Holstein) and the HG Barmbek (Hamburg) play.

Clubs that want to move up to the 2nd division must declare by March 15th.

Only clubs that do not register for the 3rd league again for the 2021/22 season lose their starting place.

«Of course we are reporting for the promotion round.

For us this is an attractive goal that we can work towards, »said Empor boss Woitendorf.
