Oberhof (dpa) - Olympic champion Arnd Peiffer has secured the first podium of the new year for the German biathletes at the World Cup home game in Oberhof.

In the sprint, the 33-year-old finished third on Wednesday with no shooting errors.

In the Thuringian Forest, the Norwegian Johannes Thingnes Bö was unbeatable again.

Behind the overall World Cup leader, his fellow countryman Sturla Holm Laegreid, who was also faultless, took second place.

Former world champion Erik Lesser missed the podium by just 2.7 seconds after ten kilometers despite a perfect shooting performance.

For the 27-year-old Bö it was already the 50th World Cup victory of his career.

With his Olympic victory in Pyeongchang 2018, which does not count as a World Cup success, the high-flyer has so far achieved 51 career victories.

Only Norway's legend Ole Einar Björndalen (94 World Cup wins / 95 career wins) and Frenchman Martin Fourcade (79/83), both of whom are no longer active, have had more successes than Bö.
