Dresden (dpa / sn) - flying visit on the couch: Corona makes the traditional open day at Saxony's universities an exception this time.

Lecture halls, institutes or laboratories in the 15 state institutions, seven study academies and the Protestant University are only accessible digitally in the pandemic lockdown.

Science Minister Sebastian Gemkow (CDU) called on the high school graduates to “use the day off for their future”.

According to the Ministry of Culture, around 17,900 young people in the Free State are currently preparing for the Abitur - according to the current status, under difficult conditions.

"The corona pandemic must not be wasted time for young people - also when it comes to the question of what happens to them after they graduate," said Gemkow, referring to specially developed "exciting digital formats" of live chats with professors via online Consultation hours and lectures through to information videos and virtual campus tours or insights into the library and university sports.

"It's worth following these special offers."

Thanks to the digital presentation, this can also be done by young people who do not live in a university location or in Saxony.

Under the motto "Try studying (online)", the information portal "Pack your studies" assures you will be provided with "comprehensive information as ever".

For example, students from the TU Dresden can be asked about their preferred subject and everyday life on Instagram, the site can be explored in a virtual campus rally and lectures can be heard live - from the comfort of your home sofa.

Information about support with choosing a course, application, financing and housing or the right semester abroad is also available at the click of a mouse.

"This year we are bringing the university to your home," they say in Leipzig.

Students guide you through the “jungle of possibilities” online, but you can also get personal advice over the phone.

At the West Saxon University of Applied Sciences in Zwickau, users can even take part in small experiments and employees and professors can chat in person.

The exchange there is often very intensive and “shaped by a lot of mutual interest,” said a spokeswoman for the university.

The TU Bergakademie Freiberg offers personal advice in virtual rooms on the online campus day: StudiTalk, live lectures, videos about courses or tips for the right choice of subjects via web seminars.

The art channel Vasistas-TV of the Dresden University of Fine Arts (HfBK) broadcasts a live stream from the engine hall, a project center for contemporary art.

In the Werkst.art there will be a podcast in the evening under the title “We show our shorts” as well as a screening of artistic short film projects and video works - by students, master class and graduates on YouTube.
