Kobrow (dpa / mv) - The avian influenza virus H5N8 has been detected in a laying hen operation in Kobrow near Laage (Rostock district).

"The farm is closed, a restricted area is set for a radius of 3000 meters and an observation area for a radius of 10,000 meters," said the Ministry of Agriculture on Wednesday.

In the next few days, a total of 37,000 laying hens from two houses would have to be killed.

The company was originally free-range.

There are 362 registered poultry holdings in the restricted area and the observation area.

All stocks are to be reported to the veterinary office immediately.

All poultry must be housed or kept in enclosures that are protected and covered against wild birds.

“As we have to experience, the avian influenza events only seemingly calmed down. The calm was deceptive, ”said Agriculture Minister Till Backhaus (SPD). He appealed to professional poultry farmers and hobby farmers. "Stay vigilant and avoid anything that could encourage the virus to enter your postures."
