Recently, the county administrative board in Kalmar reported four landowners on Öland to the police for environmental crimes after the discovery of manure spreading near the infiltration channel for drinking water in Lindby on Öland.
One year ago, Borgholm Energi also stopped collecting drinking water from the canal due to the nitrate values being too high.
- Now the values have gone down.
It may of course be the case that they will rise again, but in that case we will discover this in the samples we take every week, says Tina Pile, head of VA production and district heating at Borgholm energy.
Several types of bacteria
She sees no risk that contaminated water could spread between the samples.
- We take samples for several different types of bacteria and if something is discovered, we receive a warning and can turn off the well that is suspected to be infected.
No contaminated water passes the waterworks.
In connection with the county administrative board reporting the landowners for environmental crimes, it also emerged that several of them did not know how close to the water they are allowed to spread manure.
- We are not their supervisory authority.
