Chilean Jose Ignacio Cornejo Florimo (Honda), leading the Dakar 2021 motorcycle category classification at the start of the day, had to retire on Wednesday after the 10th stage between Neom and Al Ula after being the victim of a fall without gravity, organizers said.

The 26-year-old driver, nicknamed "Nacho", fell at km 252 of the special, but was able to resume the race.

He crossed the finish line in 11th position but the driver, by mutual agreement with the race medical service, chose to withdraw from the competition, in particular because of a potential risk of concussion.

He was taken by helicopter to Tabuk hospital for further examinations.

The stage was won by the American Ricky Brabec, his teammate at the Japanese manufacturer Honda.

The Chilean won the 8th stage and finished second twice in the 5th and 7th stages.

He had occupied the head of the general classification since Sunday and was 11 min 24 sec ahead of his first pursuer at the start of today's stage.

This was his 6th participation in the Dakar after having notably finished 4th in 2020 with two stage victories to his credit.

This is the third retirement of a favorite, after that of the Australian Toby Price on KTM on Tuesday and the withdrawal of the French Xavier de Soultrait (Husqvarna) on Monday.
