Berlin (dpa) - Filmmakers should pay more attention to the environment in projects in the future.

State Minister for Culture Monika Grütters (CDU) wants to stipulate that film teams, for example, have to draw up a climate balance sheet if they want to receive federal funding.

"I would like the industry to become a role model and a pioneer here," said Grütters in Berlin.

The cabinet launched a corresponding draft on Wednesday to revise the film funding law.

The proposals still have to be decided in parliament.

For example, the template also provides for film funding to be better adapted to unforeseen events such as the corona pandemic.

In Germany, film companies can apply for financial support.

There are pots worth millions in the federal states, but also at the federal level.

The Filmförderungsanstalt (FFA) levies the so-called film tax on cinemas, the video industry and the television industry.

If a film project receives money from the film funding agency, however, requirements apply.

For example, the film has to run exclusively in the cinema for a certain period of time.

But what if cinemas are closed for weeks like they are now?

Then it should be possible in the future to show films with a permit faster on streaming services, as long as cinemas are financially involved.

“We want to make film funding more flexible in times of the pandemic,” said Grütters.

A more extensive revision was originally planned.

The law is to apply for two years.

Funding aid should therefore only be granted if “effective measures are taken to promote ecological sustainability” during the production of a film.

Details are still to be determined.
