Schwerin / Rostock (dpa / mv) - The controversial new fertilizer ordinance for Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is legally secure from the perspective of the responsible federal ministries in Berlin.

This was stated by State Agriculture Minister Till Backhaus (SPD) on Wednesday at the digital soil and fertilization day of LMS Agricultural Consulting.

"The federal ministries for the environment and for agriculture agree," said Backhaus in Schwerin.

More than 400 participants were connected.

The decision from the EU from Brussels is still pending.

The minister again campaigned for a partnership with the farmers in an “Alliance for Clean Water”.

In mid-December, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's state government passed the new fertilizer ordinance, despite long resistance from farmers, with the aim of protecting groundwater from excessive nitrate inputs.

Stricter restrictions apply to 13 percent of agricultural land, so that farmers fear crop losses.

“But that also means that 87 percent of the usable agricultural area is intact,” said Backhaus.

You can fertilize again from February.

The agri-food industry is very important in the northeast.
