Düsseldorf (dpa) - The young liberals in North Rhine-Westphalia have proposed a fundamental change to this year's summer holidays because of the corona pandemic.

The FDP youngsters spoke out on Tuesday in favor of dividing the six-week summer vacation into thirds.

According to this, only two holiday weeks should actually remain in the summer - two more should be docked to the Easter and Christmas holidays or, in some cases, can be taken individually by the schools.

In view of the high number of infections in the cold season, there would be a buffer so that less classroom teaching would have to be canceled, argued state chairman Alexander Steffen.

The reallocation of holidays also strengthens health protection.

This could be a model for all federal states.

The proposal has little chance of implementation.

NRW School Minister Yvonne Gebauer (FDP) told the German Press Agency in Düsseldorf: "It is the privilege of young people to propose something unconventional."

Gebauer announced that he would be happy to discuss the possibilities, but also the limits of educational policy with the next generation - "especially when it comes to such long-term issues as the summer vacation regulations established between all federal states for years to come".

According to the nationwide holiday calendar, the summer holidays in North Rhine-Westphalia are from July 5th to August 18th this year.
