Wolfsburg (AP) - Volkswagen wants to fix around 56,000 copies of the Golf 8 software problems with an update.

The group emphasized that this was not a mandatory recall or "no safety-relevant issues", but a voluntary action.

The measure should be seen in connection with electronics problems with the important model.

"For vehicles that have already been delivered, the functionality of the user interface is to be increased and known comfort restrictions eliminated," the company explained.

The uploading represents a “normal process in active digital life cycle management” - Golf 8s delivered from the end of July 2020 would have the new version ex works.

According to information from the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung”, however, it is also about persistent problems with a control unit that is supposed to contribute to the “apparently massive errors” in the car's digital infotainment system.

In the affected vehicles, there are sometimes failures of the navigation system and other screen displays.

According to VW, around 26,000 Golf 8s in Germany will be provided with the update, the remaining 30,000 will be in other European countries.

“The service campaign lasts one day, customers get a free rental car and a service voucher.

In addition, every updated Golf receives a one-year extension guarantee free of charge. "

In the eighth edition of the VW Group's “bread and butter” model, there were initially considerable problems with the electronics in production.

By the end of the start-up year 2019, less than ten percent of the originally targeted amount had been produced.

In the course of this, the works council also sharply criticized the management: too much new technology was stuffed into the new Golf too quickly.

The VW top, however, spoke at times of one of the best model launches ever.

With the complex control technology, the company was also largely breaking new ground - as was the case with the first models in the electric ID series.
