January 12, 2021 Telegram has registered 25 million new users in the last 72 hours.

This was stated by its founder, Pavel Durov.

The announcement comes at a time when WhatsApp, the messaging app's main rival, is at the center of numerous controversies due to the updated terms of use that will allow more data to be shared with Facebook.

Durov, 36, some of whom spent in Italy in childhood, said on his Telegram channel that the app had over 500 million monthly active users in the first weeks of January and "25 million new users joined. to Telegram only in the last 72 hours ".

Durov does not mention the rival app, but explains that, in his opinion, "people no longer want to trade their privacy for free services."

The new WhatsApp terms have sparked criticism as non-European users who do not accept the new conditions before February 8 will be cut off from the messaging application.

Durov said on Tuesday that Telegram has become the "greatest refuge" for those looking for a private and secure communication platform and assured new users that his team "takes this responsibility very seriously."

Telegram was founded in 2013 by brothers Pavel and Nikolai Durov, who also founded the Russian social network VKontakte.

One of the characteristics that made it popular is the refusal to cooperate with any authority and to hand over the message encryption keys, which has led to its ban in several countries, including Russia.

Although at the end of last year, Moscow announced it would lift the ban.
