Schwerin (dpa / mv) - The climate protection initiative Fridays for Future has reiterated its call for a move away from fossil fuels and protested against the completion of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.

At a rally in front of the State Chancellery in Schwerin on Tuesday, a corona-related small group of five young people called on the state government to give up its support for the controversial gas pipeline through the Baltic Sea.

The action was triggered by the latest resolutions by the Mecklenburg Vorpommern government and state parliament to set up a state-owned environmental foundation.

Although this is intended to promote environmental, nature and climate protection projects in the northeast, it is also intended to be economically active in favor of Nord Stream 2.

The Schützenhilfe for the pipeline project has met with massive criticism from environmental groups.

They fear that additional gas deliveries will further delay the energy transition in Germany towards 100 percent green electricity.

Proponents of the pipeline, on the other hand, see gas-fired power plants as a necessary bridging technology in order to be able to guarantee security of supply during the transition period.

Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD), who is massively committed to the completion of Nord Stream 2, renewed her invitation to dialogue.

"It is important to me to be in contact with our young climate activists and to involve them," she wrote on Twitter.
