Berlin (dpa) - In the current lockdown, according to the Naturschutzbund (Nabu), a particularly large number of nature lovers have taken time for the "hour of the garden birds".

According to the association on Tuesday, around 164,000 people nationwide observed the birds in parks and gardens - more than ever before.

3.9 million birds were counted, an average of 23 birds per observation.

In the previous year the average was 25 birds.

According to Nabu, one possible reason for the decline could be the very mild winter again.

"Because the warmer and less snowy the winter is, the lower the number of birds in the gardens," the message said.

The birds are therefore increasingly in the forests, where they find natural sources of food.

An interim evaluation shows that the house sparrow still holds the top position, followed by the great tit.

Also on the podium: the wood pigeon in 3rd place. It was reported 31 percent more often than in the previous year, a possible sign of a positive population development.

It is also noticeable that the street pigeon, currently in 10th place, recorded 67 percent more reports than last year.

The blue tit is currently in fourth place. Nationwide, a decrease of 15 percent compared to the previous year was registered.

In spring 2020, an epidemic triggered by a bacterium had decimated the stocks.

According to Nabu, the population has not yet fully recovered.

Nabu intends to carry out a final evaluation from the end of January, when all participants have reported their observations.

The "Hour of the Winter Birds" took place from January 8th to 10th.
