The Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia hopes to welcome a limited number of spectators for the Masters in April, despite the Covid-19 pandemic, its president Fred Ridley announced on Tuesday.

“After the previous edition went well last November behind closed doors, with only essential staff, we are confident in our ability to responsibly invite a limited number of spectators to Augusta,” said Ridley.

The Grand Slam tournament, supposed to take place from April 8 to 11, will follow the same health and safety protocols as those of last November, when it was rescheduled after its postponement due to the coronavirus.

American Dustin Johnson won his second major title there.

Tests before the tournament, temperature measurements and compulsory wearing of masks were among these measures.

To allow the presence of a public, Mr. Ridley however agreed that an improvement in the health situation related to Covid-19 would be decisive.

“While we are disappointed that we cannot accommodate all ticketed spectators this year, we will ensure they have access to Augusta in 2022, provided conditions allow,” he added.
