Gifhorn (dpa / lni) - No 15-kilometer radius, but exit restriction and contact ban: The Gifhorn district wants to impose significantly stricter rules on people in view of the high number of new corona infections.

An exit restriction in the later evening and at night and a far-reaching ban on contact are planned, said District Administrator Andreas Ebel on Monday.

On the other hand, the district for the time being refrained from restricting people's freedom of movement to a radius of 15 kilometers around their home address.

So far, this also applies to other districts in Lower Saxony with high numbers of infections.

The CDU politician said the exit restriction should apply from Tuesday evening between 8:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. and until the end of January.

It is being examined to forbid contacts outside of one's own household from Friday, but no later than next Monday.

Meetings in private households should then no longer take place, but exceptions, for example for home care, should be possible, said Ebel.

A task force should better monitor retirement and nursing homes.

The district administrator also demanded more vaccine from the state of Lower Saxony - the vaccine doses delivered so far were all used up.

The district is most affected by the wave of infections in Lower Saxony.

The number of new infections calculated per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days rose to 259.5.

The total number of cases of infection rose by seven to 2,698, 44 people have died so far.

In the past seven days, 458 cases had been added, said Ebel.

During the holidays, households would have "interpreted the restrictions very generously".

But he also justified the development with the high number of tests, which is above the number required by the Robert Koch Institute.

There are up to 300 tests daily in the district.

According to the new rules of the tightened lockdown, the district could restrict people's freedom of movement from a 7-day incidence of 200.

One reason for the district to forego this regulation is the country's indeterminate requirements.

People from other districts are likely to come to Gifhorn, the effects on the infection rate should be low, it said.

In addition, curfews and contact bans are easier to monitor.

The Gifhorn police chief Thomas Bodendiek announced that he would provide additional staff who would monitor the regulations with the "necessary certainty".

With an incidence of 193.7, the district of Cloppenburg was just below the 200 mark, from which the range of motion can be limited to 15 kilometers around the place of residence.

This restriction is not currently planned there either;

not even in the event that the mark is exceeded in the next few days, said district spokesman Sascha Sebastian Rühl.

Compliance with such a rule can hardly be checked, the distances to work or shopping are great.

Some offers are not to be found within 15 kilometers of the residence.

"At the same time, it would be difficult to explain to the citizens in a meaningful way why they shouldn't travel more than 15 kilometers and at the same time be visited by people outside the district," explained Rühl.

In the Helmstedt district, with an incidence of 178.5, there is no such regulation so far.

In the Wittmund district, the incidence was 170.4, the district administration wants to closely monitor the development of the number of infections.

The Wittmund district is rather skeptical of a 15-kilometer radius when the 200 incidence is exceeded, "in principle and for practical reasons".

The freedom of the people will be restricted further, but the measures are appropriate, emphasized Gifhorn's District Administrator Ebel: “It is up to each individual to adhere to the contact restrictions now.

Now everyone is really in demand. "
