Osnabrück (dpa) - The funding of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture for investments in agriculture should be expanded, according to farmers' president Joachim Rukwied.

"We have to discuss intensively with politicians how this program can be expanded," said Rukwied of the "Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung".

The program, known as the “Farmer Billion”, was massively oversubscribed when it started on Monday, which is why many farmers would probably miss out.

Immediately after the start, the website for registering for the funding program collapsed.

“It was kind of like a lottery game.

The majority of farmers who want to invest in future technologies will go away empty-handed here, ”said Rukwied.

Germany wants to invest a three-digit billion amount in climate protection.

“Agriculture is an industry that can do a lot in terms of climate protection.

That should also be promoted accordingly, ”said the farmer president.

Federal Minister of Agriculture Julia Klöckner (CDU) had made a total of 816 million euros available for the years 2021 to 2024 to enable farmers to invest in modern technology for more climate, nature and environmental protection.

Due to the great demand, the funding volume for machines for the first half of 2021 has already been exhausted.
