While Vice President Mike Pence will not invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Donald Trump from office, as Democrats had hoped, the House of Representatives is due to consider the indictment against the president on Wednesday, for incitement to the insurrection.

DECRYPTION

Eight days before the official end of his mandate, Donald Trump appears more and more isolated.

Twitter has just purged 70,000 accounts linked to the conspiracy movement which refuses the defeat of the American president - whose account has been suspended for an indefinite period.

And the Democrats want to speed things up: they are calling on Mike Pence, the vice president, as well as his ministers, to remove the outgoing president even before January 20, the official date.

But for now, at the White House we are making a common front.

A long impeachment trial in prospect

Donald Trump and his vice president met on Monday evening in the Oval Office and displayed their unity: they pledged to continue their work together until the end of their mandate.

This means two things: Donald Trump clearly has no intention of resigning, and the Vice President is not going to invoke the 25th Amendment that would end the President's term, as the Democrats hoped.

So there is only one voice left for the opposition to try to oust Trump: the impeachment process.

The House of Representatives will examine this Wednesday the indictment filed Monday by the Democrats, who accuse the president of inciting an insurgency after the events on Capitol Hill.

This act will be supported by the majority Democrats and possibly by some Republicans.

It should pass easily, but then there will be a long Senate impeachment trial ... which should go beyond January 20, the day Joe Biden was inaugurated.

Joe Biden takes no position

Relatives of the elected president are now worried about seeing this complex procedure hamper the legislative action of the Democrats, from the start of the mandate.

Some even suggest waiting the first 100 days before sending the articles of impeachment to the Senate.

Joe Biden, who poses as president of the rally, avoids commenting on the question: on Monday, he simply indicated that according to him, Donald Trump should not exercise his functions.

And announced the theme of his investiture ceremony: unity.
